Wouldn't it be cool to see things you captured from the same day past years? Also give a chance to see old memories again without really looking for them.

Ghosts n' Goblins Resurrection just came out for Xbox, anyone keen for brutal platforming?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:25 PM PDT

One of the things to help me through the COVID weirdness has been dabbling with reviewing games, and this is the first time I've gotten an advance code from a publisher. I was pretty excited. So if anyone's interested in how this punishing platformer eventually beat some fun into me, read on!

(This review is also up here at SUPERJUMP and it would help me out if you read it there BUT you totally don't have to. I've pasted it all below, 'coz I'm just as happy to talk shit with you guys here about how savage this game is!)

    ------

Arthur is the kind of knight who gives everything his all. Even if he doesn't actually run very fast, he still brings those knees and elbows right up like a pro sprinter. His beefy throwing arm launches lances at a breathless pace. The idyllic fairytale kingdom in which he lives seems to rely on him as their sole protector, and he's always up to the task.

So if Arthur wants to sit in a lush meadow wearing nothing but his boxer shorts and canoodle with the blue-haired beauty efficiently known as 'Princess', he's certainly earned the rest.

Unfortunately, the Demon Lord disagrees, unleashing his ghoulish minions upon the land once more and setting the kingdom aflame. Terrible tendrils of darkness swarm over the the sacred Umbral Tree, causing the magical Umbral Bees dwelling within to flee and scatter throughout the realm. As a final insult, the Demon Lord snatches Princess up and swiftly quits the scene, setting Arthur off on his quest to save the day.

It's a decidedly old-school setup, fitting for this unapologetically retro platformer. As a reimagining of both the 1985 arcade classic Ghosts 'n Goblins and its 1988 sequel Ghouls 'n Ghosts, this package brings gorgeous new visuals and merges the punishing difficulty of the originals with optional modern compromise, inviting more players to the madness.

Four difficulty levels are offered. Each alters things like enemy numbers and aggression, as well as how many hits Arthur can take before crumbling to a pile of bones. As someone who has played many platformers but few among those designed to be difficult, my choice to play on the second-easiest setting proved the sweet spot once I'd settled into the quirks of the game's mechanics.

Similar to Capcom's own Resident Evil 5, in which combat is built around the unusual choice of having to remain stationary while aiming, I found overcoming the difficulty of Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection is as much about learning how it plays as it is unlearning how to play everything else.

Arthur feels almost sluggish to move and there's a strange disconnect between expectations set by his energetic run animation and how slowly he actually moves. Physics also take some getting used to, and his jumping arc is fixed, meaning there's no tapering velocity or changing direction mid-air with a corrective tap of the d-pad. When Arthur runs off an edge, he loses all forward momentum the instant he's airborne and plummets directly downward.

Thankfully, once these quirks had wrestled the resistance from me, I found enemy behaviour and platforming well-tuned to Arthur's movement. There can be a slight element of luck to success, as occasionally the randomness of things like enemy projectiles and moving platforms can converge into an inescapable situation. However for the most part, Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection admirably navigates the tricky balance between the frustration of repeated failure and the reward that comes from building skill to overcome it.

Completing the campaign requires finishing one level in each of the game's five zones. Though the final three zones each contain only one level each, the opening two offer a choice between two levels, and only one needs to be cleared to progress. The inclusion of these branching paths is a smart approach for an experience so challenging, bringing the satisfaction of completion closer while promoting replayability.

At the end of each gruelling gauntlet is a unique boss fight with a fiendish set of attacks to avoid and patterns to learn. There's a nice variety to these, with battles ranging from the standard setup of dodging and waiting for a chance to strike, to more advanced encounters with moving platforms. One standout has sections on the back of a flying dragon, its erratic movements and evasive loops a fun additional wrinkle to manage whilst taking shots at its head.

After felling the final boss, any completed levels can be replayed in Shadow Mode, which remixes visuals, lighting and enemies for a spicier challenge. It also offers a chance to uncover more secret areas and find any collectibles missed.

Among those are the Umbral Bees, which act as a currency for learning new skills or upgrades, and these can be essential in tight spots. In addition to helpful offensive magic like lightning attacks and turning enemies to frogs, there are buffs to help reveal hidden chests, and crucially, the ability to carry more than one weapon at a time.

Of the eight available weapons, there are definitely a few duds. In some situations certain weapons, such as the bomb-like Holy Water with its limited range, are near useless. It's frustrating to be stuck with the wrong weapon, particularly when they're collected by simply running into them, so if an enemy knocks you into one, you're stuck with it. It's worth unlocking the perk to carry more as soon as possible.

There's an endearing earnestness to the presentation of Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection that can help keep you going. Failing a particular section repeatedly sometimes prompts a popup message, offering not only tips for success, but words of encouragement. "Almost! Keep at it! I have faith you'll fell this foe!", one of them cheers. It's an adorable little touch.

Running on Capcom's excellent and impressively versatile RE Engine, the beautiful storybook art style of Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection looks superb. Both Arthur and the many diabolical creatures blocking his path are animated with an effective simplicity that complements the art, reminiscent of paper dolls or old Flash cartoons. It's the kind of style that can look a little flat in screenshots, but is elevated significantly by how appealing it all looks in motion.

Once the quirks of gameplay settle in, there's a lot of challenging fun to be had with Ghosts 'n Goblins Resurrection. Enemy and level design feel consistently fresh from beginning to end and the Shadow Mode, difficulty settings and countless hidden secrets offer welcome excuses to keep playing. Capcom have done an admirable job revitalising one of their oldest franchises by welcoming new players without alienating long-time fans.

    Using xbox as streaming pc.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 06:12 PM PDT

Question. Can I stream gameplay FROM my pc THROUGH my xbox and stream on twitch?

Basically I want to use my xbox to stream instead of my pc until I can get a second pc. I dont have a 10k pc and I have issues with smooth video during intense visuals, it makes it un watchable. While recording I will hit 85-95 percent cpu utilization. While not streaming I wont go past 70 percent so I'm assuming this is my issue for choppy recording/streams. So hoping using a second pc/xbox I can solve this issue. Thank you for your time

How do you keep the Xbox One version of a game when transferring from an external drive to an Xbox Series X/S?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 10:17 PM PDT

Clunky title, sorry. Basically, I'm working with a new Xbox Series S, an old Xbox One, and an external hard drive. Some games I want to play the optimized version on my Series S, but I also want the non-optimized version so I can play it off the external drive on my original Xbox One.

When I plug my external drive into the Series S and try to run an optimized game, it downloads the new version onto the console (good) but then also converts that version on the external drive to the optimized version, so I now can't play it on my regular Xbox One (not so good).

What's the best way to play the same games on both a Series S and an original Xbox One utilizing an external drive?

I already have an Xbox ONE S, should I upgrade to the Series S? Is it worth it?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2021 09:37 PM PDT

I got my Xbox one s around 12 months ago and I'm currently considering buying a series s. I'm pretty confident that the series s is quite a fair bit better than the Xbox one s, especially when paired with Xbox game pass.

Should I get the series S or stick with my one S?
