I bought my 71 year old friend an Xbox

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 03:09 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I have just bought a family friend an xbox (well, he paid but I collected it after recommending it)

He wanted to pick up gaming, he liked the idea and has wanted something to keep him busy during lockdown. I said the Xbox one s is a good starting point, it plays games, DVD's, YouTube, Netflix etc. He was sold! We went onto Argos, he bought it and I collected it. A few days later I popped it round to his house and gave him so guidelines from the door how to plug it in and get setup. He said the Xbox one is "super easy" to setup, I helped with a few things over the phone (painstaking!) but now we're set up. He got the fallen order bundle, I am awaiting further news!

The ultimate guide to get an Open NAT

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:42 AM PDT

    Requirements:

An ISP that gives you your own IP (no sharing across several households, CGNAT/CGN is something you want to avoid at all cost when signing up to an ISP).

A router/modem capable of port forwarding (pretty much any router except in most cases the cheap ones you get from your ISP).

    An Xbox.

    How to:

You start with your Xbox. Make sure it connects to your router just fine and has online access. It will probably say Moderate NAT under network settings. Go to advanced settings, here you write down the IP of your console. Should be 192.xxx.xxx.xxx. It doesn't matter if you set your IP manually or automatically, though I prefer to automatically set the IP on the console and have the router remember the device and always give it the same. If you don't have that option, it's better to manually give the Xbox its IP.

The important thing is that port forwarding happens per IP. So if your console IP changes (which is its local IP in your network, not the IP your network has been given by your ISP), the port forwarding will not work anymore and you have to change the IP in the router rules. That's why if you can, enable all settings that always give your console the same local IP.

Now on to the router. Find out how to get to the port forwarding rules. There is typically a page where you have all your devices, find your Xbox either by recognizing the name (should be the same name that you can set in the Xbox system settings) or the IP you wrote down. From here you should be able to select it and in a best case scenario turn on an option "allow automatic port forwarding". Check that option.

Now you have to add rules for your console. Ports are either TCP or UDP. They are used for various different things, for communication, for matchmaking, for synching achievements and savegames, pretty much every traffic on Xbox has its own port. If it can't use that port, it uses fallbacks, leading to slower loading times or failing matchmaking. So you really want an open NAT, which basically just means that your console can use all its services as it should.

You now need to create separate rules for a number of ports, so that traffic can freely flow over them without your router blocking them.

    TCP 53

    UDP 53

    TCP 80

    TCP 88

    UDP 500

    TCP 3074

    UDP 3074

    UDP 3544

    UDP 4500

    UDP 61017

    TCP 61018

    TCP 61019

Create these, apply them and your console should instantly have an open NAT.

If however you have a double NAT on your Xbox, you either have CGNAT from your ISP, then there is nothing you can do. Or you have two devices acting as routers. This can be a modem and a router, in this case only use one device as a router and put the other one into "bridge mode". This will just forward all traffic through it and not try to route your traffic. I like to use the device that is closest to the actual line (so mostly the modem) as the router, unless it has really limited options itself.

One more thing: If you also play on your PC, make sure to enable the ports for that as well. Xbox Live uses them across devices. You can find out your PC IP by clicking the search icon in the taskbar, entering cmd and pressing ENTER, then entering ipconfig and pressing ENTER. There could be multiple adapters in here, typically the top one is the one you are actually using and that needs to get the ports forwarded. Check the standard gateway, it should point to your router IP (192.xxx.0 or 1.1 in most cases) if it is in active use. Then go to your router and forward the same ports as above for your PC IP.

I’m a 21 year old girl who never had an online buddy on xbox

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 10:47 PM PDT

I always hear wholesome stories of people who find their best friends, or really great friends in general playing online and stuff. I'm looking for any kind of friend no matter who you are! I mainly play Ark: Survival Evolved because I really love dinosaurs lol. I like PVE servers! I recently moved to a new city and no longer have any friends so I'm looking forward to this, but also super nervous.

User updated list of Xbox One keyboard and mouse supported games

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:09 PM PDT

    Hi y'all!

In the last few weeks, I started playing on Xbox one using keyboard and mouse, but only a handful of games have support to this input method to this day. And as Microsoft Store does not have a tag for games that support this input method, players who want to use it need to rely on other methods to discover games that have support to KBM.

I'm sure many of you know and/or used some sites that provides a list of Xbox One games with KBM support, but none of them (at least the most popular ones I know) are user updated. It is not easy to suggest a new game to be added to those lists (for example, I tried to add HyperDot in two different sites, but got no answer when contacting the maintainers)

With that in mind, I developed a website to be a user updated list of Xbox One keyboard and mouse supported games. Anyone can easily suggest a new game to be added. A description about how to get KBM input working for that game can also be added (some games need you to change Input Device on game settings, or only work in some parts of the game, etc), as we don't have a default method that works for all games (ideally, they should all be plug and play, no extra settings to get it working, but that is what we have for now).

Any feedback on what could be improved on the website would be much appreciated. And I hope, by increasing visibility to this function (keyboard and mouse support), more and more developers start adding it to their games in a reasonable way (because, of course, some games need to have separate lobbies for Controller players and KBM players and that is only natural). Link to access the website will be in the comments.

For gamers who plays with kontrol freeks and wants to buy a scuf, the kontrol freeks DO NOT fit on the thumb sticks they give you (scuf joysticks). So I took apart a regular stock Xbox one controller and swapped the thumb sticks so it can fit. It only took a total of 5 screws. I hope this helps.

My second elite series 2 has once again broken.

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 12:16 PM PDT

First one had a dodgy LB, so I sent it back. New one seemed fine, apart from a squeaky trigger with the locks on, but I thought it could deal with that so I kept it. RB button now works about 40% of the time, and LB double presses about 25% of the time. I'm going to send it back again and if this new one breaks, I'm getting my money back and switching. This level of quality control shouldn't exist with a controller of this price.

Is it just me, or is Games with Gold terrible now?

    Posted: 03 Jun 2020 05:46 PM PDT

I feel like it used to be good, but I haven't downloaded a single game from Games with Gold for MONTHS now. Considering in the past I have gotten: The Crew, For Honor, Hitman, Metal Gear Solid V, Ryse Son of Rome, Sleeping Dogs, Superhot, Sunset Overdrive, a couple Walking Dead seasons, and Watch Dogs, just to name a few, you would think that they would have consistently better titles. I mean, the last halfway decent game (in my opinion) was Friday the 13th, which was back in October I believe.
