Samsung Q80R TV + Xbox One X + HDR: Problem when switching display modes. Anyone else?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 08:11 PM PST

TLDR: New Samsung TV loses video signal when Xbox One X switches to HDR display mode, shows "Check Device Power" screen. Looking for others with the same problem.

I have a new 65" Samsung Q80R 4K TV, and a new Xbox One X. Everything works fine until I launch an HDR game or app. The screen goes black, then the TV displays a spinner, then the TV displays a "Check Device Power" screen. It will flicker and alternate between the spinner and "Check Device Power" screens for what seems like a random amount of time. 5 seconds, 10 seconds, a minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes. At some point the TV may pick up the signal and display it, sometimes it never will. It seems completely random, though it seems to get into moods where it either consistently does or does not work. When it loses signal I can usually switch back to the home screen using the controller, at which point the TV picks up the signal again, then loses it when I switch back to the app. This is happening with every HDR app or game that I try: Hitman 2, Forza Motorsport 7, and the Blu Ray Player app with 4K HDR blu ray discs so it isn't specific to any one app. I don't have any other 4K HDR sources to test other than the Xbox. If the TV does manage to pick up the HDR signal, it is rock solid as longs as the display mode remains the same. It is only a problem when switching display modes, never while actually playing a game.

Xbox is connected directly to TV. I have tried many different HDMI 2.0 and 2.1 cables on different HDMI inputs. I have enabled and disabled VRR, auto low latency, and YCC422. I have reset the TV to factory settings. I have been on the phone with Samsung support and Microsoft support, who are stumped. I have brought the console to a Microsoft store where they connected it to a 65" Samsung Q9 and it worked perfectly. They were also stumped. All diagnostic tests on TV and Xbox come back good.

Samsung put me in contact with a local third-party repair tech who told me that this is a known issue caused by some recent firmware update to either the TV or the Xbox. He says that there are thousands of open tickets about this issue. When I call Samsung directly they deny any knowledge of this. I search and can't find any mention of anyone else having this problem.

From what I can tell this is one of the most highly recommended TVs for gaming. I don't understand how HDR support could be so severely broken and there not be more noise about it. Do I have a lemon? I hope so because I think this TV is ideal for my situation, which is an Xbox One X in a very bright room with a lot of windows. If this is a widespread issue I will return the TV and avoid Samsung, but I don't know what else to buy.

    XB1 game giveaway, anyone want?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 01:43 PM PST

I got these games for Christmas in the Xbox package, but I already own them. Easier to pass them to someone else and save them some money! The Fortnite card is just some skins, but I won't be using them. I just have one of each card*

Let me know which one you want and I'll PM the back for the code :) ~

So I have an Xbox one x and hooked it up to the 4K tv the other day and everything was fine until I switched the settings to 4K and started up CoD which froze on the loading screen. Afterwards it went to straight black screen or time to time this visual. #blackscreen #xboxonex #x1x

    Achievement Bug?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 09:51 PM PST

I was play Assassin's Creed 3 earlier and I was going for all the achievements, which I thought I did. I got my last achievement and it popped and everything (yippee). But when I go to look at my achievement list in the xbox one interface, it says the achievement is still locked, am I screwed now?

My Elite Series 2 controller randomly turns off. Any idea what that might be causing this?

    Posted: 14 Jan 2020 02:47 PM PST

Yes, the battery is fully charged. Got the controller the day it came out and it's been good until about a week ago. Now it'll randomly turn off. Just had it turn off 3x within 2 rocket league matches. Seems to be random.

Any idea what might be causing it?
