I tested 360 controllers to find out which one had the best battery life. Here's the results:

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 05:26 PM PST

If you ever wondered why your controller's battery life may be so poor or why others last much longer, this little science experiment might reveal some interesting information!

So here we have a contest. A contest to see which model of controller gets the best battery life and to see which ones get the worst!

If you don't know, Microsoft revised the circuit board inside the controller several times between 2005 and 2014, making tweaks to the main chip, voltage regulators and more. So I wanted to do a thorough test to find out which specific boards get the best battery life, testing the controllers battery consumption while playing, while turned off, and while syncing. Here are the major board revisions. Thank you to u/dkillone for having a fantastic website that goes over every controller and board:

    WSK368 with shield (2005-2006), Sample size: 1

    WSK368 without shield (2006-2010), Sample size: 5

    WC01 (2006-2009), Sample size: 6

1403 first revision, Sample size: 4

1403 second revision, Sample size: 1

    Testing methodology:

Because each play session would be different and so would each set of batteries, I decided the best way to measure battery life would be to see how much power the controller pulls from the batteries. This takes out a lot of variables and allowed me to get results MUCH faster. However, the results will still tell us which controller has the best battery life.

I tested every controller with the same set of AA generic batteries. I put a multimeter between the two batteries in series to measure how many milliamps each controller consumed. After I did all the controllers, I measured them again to see if the results changed due to battery voltage drop. They did not change.

While I did measure the draw on the batteries with rumble, I decided to exclude the data I gathered as it was all over the place and mostly irrelevant. Rumble intensity varies on a game by game basis, so your battery life with rumble on will be different than someone elses. Some controllers had weaker motors and consumed less power. I think that the rumble motors affect battery life in a large way, as they consume a lot of power which I'll get to in the conclusion. But the variability amongst controllers made me disqualify it.

Also, I did run into a limitation with measuring power draw with the controller off or in standby. My multimeter was not good enough to register any load under 1 milliamp. So these results are a little less accurate. With that said, that just means that any controller that consumes more than 1 is quite mediocre.

So with all that out of the way, the results!

    1st Place: WC01

    Standby drain: <1 mA

    Active drain: 22-23 mA

    Sync Drain: 57-58 mA

In a very surprising turnout, the WC01 boards did a phenomenal job in terms of low power usage. While nearly tied by the 2nd position controller in some categories, the WC01 beat every other controller in every category. While testing the controllers in use, it was noticeable that all other loads barely affected its incredible low power draw. Rumble power was noticeably lower than most other controllers on average. Using the analog inputs didn't event push any of the controllers past 25 mA. With one exception.

My 2008 Dragon Controller with a WC01 did not reflect these numbers at all and overall consumed nearly twice as much power. I decided to exclude it from the average, as it was probably defective, which is probably given this board had the largest pool of total samples.

    2nd Place: 1403 First Revison

    Standby drain: <1 mA

    Active drain: 23 mA

    Sync drain: 60 mA

While narrowly losing to the WC01, the 1403 first gen boards were fantastic as well. I was expecting them to win, but they sure did a good job. Not much else to say except they were remarkably consistent. Every single one I had turned in the exact same results. Very happy to see that.

    3rd Place: WSK368 without shield

    Standby drain: <1 mA

    Active drain: 33 mA

    Sync drain: 102-115 mA

Getting the bronze medal and falling quite a ways back, we have the newer WSK368 board. Kind of disappointing results from these. Despite being used at the same time as the WC01 boards, they really fall behind with nearly 50% greater power drain while in use and about DOUBLE the power used while syncing. Pretty unremarkable and also unfortunate, as these boards are somewhat common. I guess that is to be expected, since they are just a tweak of the original launch 2005 board.

4th Place: WSK368 with shield / Original 2005 launch controller with dark glossy trim

    Standby drain: <1 mA

    Active drain: 51 mA

    Sync drain: 115 mA

While not that surprising, my only first gen WSK368 based controller did not do very well, pulling the most power of any controller while turned on and while syncing. With that said, I only had one controller and it was the original launch controller only sold for a few months after launch in 2005, so later models might be better. Further testing on this controller also revealed a very poor voltage regulator that drains the battery noticeably if it is over 3.3 volts, even while off. However, at least it did not have any drain issues while off with normal alkaline batteries. Which can't be said for the last place controller.

    5th Place: 1403 Second Revision

    Standby drain: 4 mA

    Active drain: 31 mA

    Sync drain: 73mA

To me, the worst controller by a longshot was second revision of the 1403 board. While it's power drain while on isn't as bad as the older WSK368, it managed to be the only controller to use over 1 milliamp while off. This thing drew a whopping 4 mA while not even doing anything. To put that into perspective, it uses 1/5 the power of a WC01 board does playing games while it just sits on your couch. Unbelievable.

Bonus test: Xbox One Controller S model 1708

    Standby drain: <1 mA

    Active drain: 37 mA

I wasn't able to test anymore than one Xbox One controller, and I also wasn't able to test sync and rumble. But, I did get a brief time to see it consumes a little bit more power than the average of 360 controllers. Kind of goes along with reports of battery life not lasting as long on One controllers.

    Conclusion and final thoughts:

One thing I have yet to mention was the impact using buttons and analog devices on battery consumption. From what I found, using buttons has almost no effect on battery usage. However, using the analog sticks or triggers causes power consumption to increase by 2-4 mA over doing nothing. Pretty neat!

As far as rumble is concerned, it usually increased power consumption to around 160 mA, typically consuming over 250 mA for a moment when it is first activated. Controllers that used less power in general seemed to used about 20-30 mA less than the more power hungry controllers, in terms of rumble.

Anyway, this was a lot of fun! I hope you guys found it helpful in learning about the battery life on your controller. I never knew the differences could be so massive at times.

If you have any further questions or ideas, let me know!

    VGA Black Screen

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 03:02 PM PST

After connecting my 360 via VGA for the first time, I went to the resolution preference and selected 1920x1080 - the screen has gone black and will not revert. It boots up black and stays black.

It will still display fine via HD component, which is how I was using it, but read on here VGA was recommended. Is this a known issue? Figured it would revert if no picture was visible or w/e after I selected the resolution, but I legit waited a full minute after selecting 1920x1080 and nothing happened. Just black screen.

Have tried resetting it by holding power down for 10 sec, but nada. It's a super old 360 w/o HDMI. Thanks for any info, guys!

Thinking about buying an Xbox 360.

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 10:55 AM PST

I had an Xbox 360 a while ago but I made the mistake of selling it and I'm seriously considering buying a new one but I have a few questions first. What is a good price and place to buy it? What kind of 360 should I buy and one other sort of different question is there a big difference between Microsoft made power supply AC adapters and none Microsoft made?

Can the 360E output audio through AV when using HDMI

    Posted: 02 Mar 2021 01:32 AM PST

Sorry if dumb question, ive never been into 360 untill lately. I know the PS3 is able to output audio through the AV cable when using HDMI video, i wasnt sure if the 360 was able to do the same as i dont have any AV cables for my 360E and my only display is my DVI Monitor.

incase anyone wants to know those passive HDMI to DVI adapters DO work on PS3 and 360, just no sound, duh
