[AMA] In 4 years I went from knowing nothing about making games to getting my first game nominated for awards alongside AAA giants (The Last of Us Part II, COD: Modern Warfare, etc.). Also, I lost an award to Hideo Kojima (it was an honor!...and it sucked a little bit :P).

    Hey everyone at r/xboxone!

I'm excited to do this AMA about DARQ - a spooky puzzle game set in a lucid dream (new trailer here). DARQ just launched on Xbox One, so I'm here to share with you some of the crazy stories that accompanied this project since its inception.

    A quick intro:

    • My name is Wlad, I'm the developer of the game.
    • I'm happy to introduce Giorgio from Feardemic (the publishing arm of the Bloober Team, known for Layers of Fear, Blair Witch, The Medium) - u/f34rd3m1c
    • And here is Essi from Dreamloop Games, an amazing dev team who helped us on the technical side of things, actually porting DARQ to Xbox One - u/DreamloopGames

Here are some fun facts that you can ask me about. (Giorgio and Essi will chime in if you have questions related to publishing / porting).

    1. I'm a first-time developer. I started working on DARQ in late 2015 when I knew nothing about game development. I had to learn everything from scratch: coding, modeling, texturing, animation, game design, level design, etc.
    2. After literally one month of work, I put together a prototype and made a trailer out of it. I didn't think much of it, but a friend of mine convinced me to upload it to Steam Greenlight (remember Greenlight?). To my utter amazement, it became one of the TOP 10 most upvoted titles on Greenlight. This resulted in my inbox being flooded with emails from the press and...publishers.
    3. Ahh, publishers. We go way back, don't we...After DARQ got greenlit on Steam, I spent about half a year meeting with publishers - some small companies, some big ones that you all know. Long story short, I was offered terrible deals (some wanted up to 70-80% revenue share and full IP ownership). I shared this story on Reddit a while back, and it became one of the most upvoted posts in the history of the platform. Some said I used bots, others had other conspiracy theories. I'm a fan of conspiracy theories. If I knew how to manufacture a viral post, I would be doing it all the time. The truth is, I had no clue this post would get so much attention. What's even weirder, after this post I started receiving more offers from publishers.
    4. I never reached out to a publisher once, yet I spent nearly 4 years answering emails from various companies and meeting with some of them. I was grateful to be offered any deals at all, considering my total lack of experience as a developer. But I couldn't accept any of them, because they felt like...well, robbery. When DARQ was ready to be released on PC, I decided to self-publish it. It went well - it got listed on Top Selling, New and Trending, and Featured and Recommended tabs on Steam. Ultimately, it became the 42nd Most Shared PC Video Game of 2019 (Metacritic) and was nominated for a bunch of awards, of which it won many. Most recently, it was nominated for TIGA's Best Adventure Game, alongside The Last of Us Part II. I have to pinch myself every day - I know how crazy all of that sounds and I don't take any of it for granted. I especially pinch myself for getting nominated for the Best Sound award alongside Death Stranding. I don't like losing, but I LOVED losing to my childhood hero, Hideo Kojima. Still, it would have been cool to win that one :)
    5. It took me 4 years to find the right publishing partner - Feardemic. You're welcome to ask me why I finally chose to team up with a publisher, and why it's Feardemic.
    6. DARQ was developed almost solo. I was lucky to team up with Bjorn Jacobsen, a sound designer who was working on Cyberpunk 2077 at the time. He deserves all the credit for all the sound awards we were nominated for. One day he reached out to me and said: "hey, I just watched DARQ's trailer - let's talk." I thought it was a prank. Other than sound, 5% of modeling and animation was outsourced to a number of talented contractors. Also, a lot of people deserve credit for helping with translation and community management. Other than that, the rest of the game was done by me.
    7. It took over 10,000 hours of work to develop the base game. Being blown away by the positive reception of the PC launch, I made a promise to develop two free DLC's. I spent about a year working on the DLC content (among other things). Today marks the day of the launch of the second DLC ("The Crypt"), as well as the launch on Xbox One, which wouldn't be possible without Feardemic and the talented team of geniuses at Dreamloop Games who ported the game.
    8. Porting to consoles & working remotely during the pandemic is no easy task. Ask Giorgio and Essi about the challenges we had to overcome to make it happen.
    9. Ask us about Xbox Series S|X and physical releases. Also, future plans when it comes to DARQ and other projects.

    Any other questions? Just ask!

This AMA will last from 10am to 12pm PT.

EDIT: This AMA is now over - feel free to post questions if you have any, I'll be happy to get back to you when time allows.

EDIT2: Thank you mods for having us!

The title basically explains it, but for further explanation I'm wondering if I purchase a game on my Xbox One, will I have to purchase it again on the Series X?

Multiplayer Games arent even games anymore, they’re esports designed from the ground up to engage competitive play

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 01:07 AM PST

With the gaming market being over saturated with epsorts and driving competition. Does anyone one know of any multiplayer games on the market that currently denounces esports, competitive play. Just want to relax, drink a beer and play a game casually where every match i play im not playing against players who eat, sleep, and breathe whatever game that im playing because you can make a living off the game. dragon quest - the perfect RPG for anyone new to the genre and old timers alike

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:18 AM PST

Hey guys, i see a lot of people on here asking about the best RPG, where should they start, which entry ,whats the best first time experience etc etc etc, and i see many answers from many point of views and everyone has an opinion.

As someone who enjoys the Jrpg experience, but also some who is hard to please with the game type for many years iv found many that fall flat, i dont click with, and i end up comparing to my 2 fav of all time in chrono trigger, and of course the mighty final fantasy 7 , iv played many since, and there has been the odd gem, but nothing thats quite kept me hooked or intererested enough to keep playing...

Then along game dragon quest on gamepass..

now this is one of the grand-daddies of RPG's i remember playing one when i was very young and didnt really appreciate the concept and turned it off quite quickly, even upon seeing this first being added to gamepass i had a slight interest but expected it to be the same old story, play for a few hours and move on.... yet here i am still playing.

This game to me is perfect for fans of the genre, and newcomers alike, it has great visuals which helps, the characters are fun and likable for the most part, it doesnt overwhelm you with things to do or take in in regards to combat, you can make things as simple or in depth as possible, and i belive this could be the game that brings people into something new that they have not tried before and be able to enjoy it....

heres a few tips for people who may not be familiar with this system and make life easier for a turn based rpg system to keep you invested.

you can sprint - if you hold RT your character can sprint

you can break things - not everything , but there are pots and barrels around the areas that will give you coins, items, potions etc.

draconian quests - when entering your name you will see a press X for draconian quests, if you are new to the genre, leave this alone, its basically additional difficulty modifiers, but if you want that challenge, then go ahead.

Explore everywhere - there are so many hidden areas and things to find, it may be a secret well, or a hidden item on a rooftop, take your time in areas , have a run around in houses, check wells, etc theres always something to find.

check bookcases and wardrobes - im not sure if the game makes this clear at any point, but if bookcases have a standout red book, you can read this and get recipes for crafting.

running around in battle doesnt do anything - a strange addition but this is basically so you dont feel static in battle, but running around doesnt help you dodge or do additional damage , it just makes people feel more involved.

you dont have to fight everything - there are no random encounters, you can see all enemies, generally attack 1 of each type of enemy in each area, and you should keep at the level the game wants you to, however if you wish to grind and become ''OP'' you can do to which you will want the tip below.

ultra battle speed - in the options there is the option to speed up battles, this i think is a great addition to people who are not used to turn based RPG's and dont want that slow down feel of combat, so you can switch up the battle speed to enjoy more of the story.

Easier combat - battle tactics, another addition that can make battles go faster, but also not overwhelm you in combat, you can set all your party members to a certain mindset or tactic, and they will do everything for you, even your main character you can set them to whatever you like and just watch the battle play out if thats what you would prefer to do.

you can respec - at a fairly early point you will get skill points to allocate, dont worry if you think you have messed up, you can visit churches and for a small amount of gold you can respec your skill tree at any point.

Enjoy the game - this is a big big game, its not something you are going rush through in 10 hours, the game makes things as easy or in depth as you want, if you want to grind, min/max characters and see everything you can, if you are not so great at menu style combat and want to enjoy a good story, then change the settings you can.

this is the first game in many years in the Jrpg genre that has truly captivated me from my few hours iv been involved with it, so anyone on the fence, never played an Rpg of this style or have not played on in a while, its on gamepass, get it downloaded and lose a good amount of hours in a great game.

Alice: Madness Returns XB1 Crash & Shutdown

    Posted: 04 Dec 2020 05:54 PM PST

So, my mom just got Alice: Madness Returns since it was only $5 on the XB store. She told me that whenever she gets the red roses, the game will crash and then the XB will turn itself off.

I'm not entirely sure if it's a problem with her XB or just because the game is old, since I haven't played the game on my XB. I already did a hard reset on her XB, and I also checked to see if it needed any updates (it didn't), but it's still having the same problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Or is it simply an "oh well" situation?

Edit: both my mom's and I's xbox's are one S' if that helps

Do people even use these anymore? I guess if you’re one of the very rare ones who haven’t tried GPU yet, you’re gonna need to try the last letter of the alphabet.
