Xbox One - Xbox Series X and S New Megathread

Xbox Series X and S New Megathread

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:38 AM PDT

    Hey r/xboxone,

Well the past 48 hours has really been crazy huh? So much news and goodies were dropped I barely know where to begin myself. Before I get started, lets get a couple things out of the way. The purpose of this megathread is to have all the conversation in one place and to help save the front page from being spammed with the same posts over and over again. All right, now lets dive into the good news.

    Xbox Series S

As I'm sure most of you know by now, the Xbox Series S was leaked a couple days ago by windowscentral.com and Brad Sams surprising everyone including Xbox themselves. Less then 12 hours later they officially revealed it and the price. For those who don't want to read what the Xbox Series S is, here's the official trailer from Xbox, for those who do well here is what we know so far.

    The Xbox Series S is:

    • All digital
    • Around 4 teraflops on its GPU
    • Same AMD Zen 2 CPU as Series X at 3.6GHz
    • Capable of up to 1440p at up to 120fps
    • DirectX Raytracing
    • Variable Rate Shading and Refresh Rate
    • Ultra Low Latency
    • 512gb Custom SSD
    • 4K Streaming Media Playback and 4K upscaling for games.
    • Launches November 10 at $299.

So if you are looking for something cheaper while better then the Xbox One, this is your best bet.

    Xbox Series X

Now on to the big brother of the Xbox Series family, the Series X. We have already known the specs for a long time and the looks so I'm not going to bore you with those again. The two big pieces of information to focus on are that the console will be $500 and will launch on November 10th alongside the Series S. Preorders go live for both consoles on September 22nd.

Edit: At the request of users, I will be including some of the Series X specs to compare.

Series X will include everything the Series S does in the list above with some key differences.

    • It will have a 4K UHD Blu Ray drive unlike the S which has no drive.
    • Has a 1tb custom SSD
    • 4K gaming for all games with up to 120fps on some games at 4K
    • 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM
    • 12 Teraflop RDNA 2 GPU
    • AMD Zen 2 CPU at 3.6GHz like Series S

For a side by comparison, here is a picture to make it look pretty.

    Xbox Game Pass Ultimate

You thought we were done, not even close (well maybe kinda close). Xbox also announced today that Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will include EA Play (formerly EA Access) this holiday season so probably close to the launch of the new consoles. So for $15 a month you really can't find a better deal in gaming.

Edit: For those who have purchased some EA Play already, Major Nelson has you covered. https://twitter.com/majornelson/status/1303685114497363968?s=20

    Xbox All Access

Last big bit of news for the day is the announcement of Xbox All Access for Xbox Series X and S. For those unfamiliar with this program it lets you pay off the console over a 2 year period (interest free) while also having Game Pass Ultimate. For Xbox Series X it will cost you $35 a month and for Series S it will cost you $25 a month. u/Dave81j6 made a chart breaking it all down and showing the value. If this sounds like something you and your wallet would like to look into, you can find out more info here.

Edit: I just found a handy guide from u/Weekndr showing the prices for Xbox Series X and S in other regions. So I'll save you all the trouble of doing the conversions and post it here for ya.

Edit 2: For those who already have a ton of GPU and wondering what happens with what you have, you will get a code for 2 years and would just wait to redeem it when your current amount of GPU goes below 12 months. This is from their FAQ.

Well that's all the information we have on it as of right now. If anymore news drops we'll be sure to update the megathread for you all. Any more posts made on these subjects will be removed, so don't bother trying to get some free karma by posting a the same tweet for the 8th time.

See you all in the comments

Why the Xbox Series S GPU is better than you think, and 299$ is a fantastic price for the full package

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:34 AM PDT

    TLDR at the bottom

I've been seeing some confusion and anger regarding the "cutback" gpu of the Xbox Series S, i'm going to try and make it a bit more clear.

The Xbox One X has around 6 TFLOPS of computing power, which, since its an AMD Chip, would put it in line with an RX580, which at the time of its release, was the closest amd chip available for comparison.
The GTX 1070 by Nvidia, has around 6 TFLOPS of computing power as well, but easily beats the RX580 in benchmarks.

    Why is that?

Teraflops is just an overarching way of measuring compute power of a gpu, comparing TFLOPS between different cards and/or manufacturers is like comparing apples to oranges. Each "generation" of graphics cards that come out, with their respective advancements in technology, manage to squeeze more out of less due to optimizations made to the technology that drives them.

    Why is this relevant?

The main competition for the RX580 is the GTX1060, how many TFLOPS do you think the GTX 1060 has?
    4.4 Teraflops.

Xbox Series S GPU has been confirmed to have a 4 Teraflop GPU running it, in the newest RDNA2 tech from AMD, of which there are still no commercially available GPUs.

Considering the tech used in the GTX 1060, and that already being the equivalent of the RX580, which was the equivalent of the One X's GPU, its very safe to assume that the Series S GPU, with the new RDNA2 technology, at the confirmed 4 TFLOPS, will be something more inline with a GTX 1070, if not better, which in today's standards for 1080/1440P gaming is still a very, very capable graphics card.

Having the equivalent (or better) of a GTX 1070, a Ryzen 7 at 3.6GHz and a NVME 512GB ssd in a 299$ package is an absurd deal.

    TLDR:

    RX580: 6TFLOPS (Xbox One X Equivalent)
GTX1060: 4.4TFLOPS (Same or better performance than the RX580)
GTX1070: 6TFLOPS (Substantially better than the RX580, even though it has the same TFLOP count)

    Don't use teraflops for comparison.
The Series S GPU, using the RDNA2 tech from AMD, will at the very least be significantly better than the One X GPU due to technology improvements, most likely inline with a GTX 1070, even though it has less TFlops.
    Newer tech = More optimized
    Amazing deal for 299$
