Xbox 360 on a CRT yields some pretty interesting and varied results Posted: 01 Jan 2021 04:56 PM PST So I recently got a CRT TV and it's been great for VHS and playing Wii and retro titles. The look is just very clean when it's on a screen that it was designed for. Curiosity got the best of me, I found some old 360 component cables and was pretty surprised. Xbox 360 came out in 05 and I didnt know anyone who had a HDTV let alone knew what high definition was. Thus, it's long history makes for very mixed results when it comes to standard definition gaming. Here is what I found: Grand Theft Auto V: I no longer own GTA V on 360, but a few years ago I did and I played it on a CRT for shits and giggles. It works. Plays in 4:3 and looks decent enough. There seems to be some cut off with the UI but damn, you have to admire Rockstar for looking out for frugal homies in 2013. Red Dead Redemption: Supports 4:3 and SD, and honestly, my god it looked pretty damn good and natural on a CRT. A lot of the games blemishes are obscured when playing in standard definition. Obviously not the best way to play, but the fact that they included the option and specifically catered to people who maybe didnt have a HDTV yet in 2010 (which was likely) is cool. Halo 3: Same story with 3. Being an extremely hyped 2007 game, I highly doubt many of the people playing it at launch were using an HDMI cable. Text is clear and game is designed well enough to make enemies, environments, etc., all pop even on a SD tv. Halo Anniversary and misc HD remakes: Funny enough, Halo Anniversary does not support 4:3. You will get a letterboxed image, even when playing on the old graphics. If for some reason you really want to play Halo 1 on a CRT, get the Xbox version or download the og off the MS store. Kind of expected considering the whole point of an HD remaster is to be played in well...HD. Other similar titles yielded the same results like Beyond Good and Evil HD. Gears of War: This one was the first I tested and again, I was shocked at how natural it all looked on a CRT. It's clear Epic was considerate of those playing in standard def especially because it was 2006 unlike some others (ahem* Dead Rising). Honestly, if i played through all of GOW1 on CRT and I would be totally okay with it. Perfect Dark Zero: Being the launch title for the 360 I would certainly hope it supports 4:3. It does and it looks okay. I cant tell if the game is actually just naturally ugly or not. I remember the movement being absolutely god awful in this game but here Joanna actually moves smoother than I remember. That's probably just my mind playing tricks tho. Rayman Origins: I really hoped this one would look good but ooof, this actually ended up being the worst looking. I was honestly surprised considering it was a kids game in 2011. Surely SOME kids were using CRTs for their 360. Also considering Rayman Origins did have a standard definition port with the Wii version, it's kind of puzzling they didnt do the same here. Really fun game with a breathtaking amount of detail and deserves to be played in HD. Call of Duty (2005-2011): I specifically tested WaW and MW3. Both supported 4:3 and standard definition and would be completely playable without issue on a CRT. Obviously if you were thinking of playing online, you might get your ass handed but campaign wise they play just fine. Also Nazi Zombies on a CRT at night is a vibe and a half. I dont own Black Ops 2 but I believe I read that Ghosts for sure dropped 4:3 support. Sleeping Dogs and Dark Souls: Both are letterboxed. They are playable for sure, but text is near impossible to make out. Also the sheer amount of detail of the sandbox turns to mush. Same with Dark Souls. Very difficult to read stats. BUT, if a CRT by some unfortunate luck became your only option, I still think you could play through these games just fine. Dark Souls will be notably harder than it already is tho, just saying. XBLA titles: These ones are mixed. Something like Shadow Complex, another game made by Epic, supports it. Indie titles like Charlie Murder dont, giving you a letterboxed image. Even then, that game specifically was fine being played in that manner. Any downloadable titles that are genuine Xbox classics rather than an HD remaster will obviously work. Battlefront 2, Jedi Academy, Halo 2, Simpsons Hit and Run, and San Andreas look like the way they were meant to be played. San Andreas especially looks really good on a CRT and it almost makes me wish I played it like that rather than through component on a HDTV like I originally did. Anybody else know of any other interesting cases with 360 on the CRT? I get it's not ideal or practical, but I still think its fascinating that this system had to cater to two different markets at the same time. [link] [comments]

Need help with slim, update breaks xbox live! Posted: 01 Jan 2021 09:03 PM PST Hi all, just picked up an xbox 360 slim (nice nostalgia.), however i am having trouble getting it to work. When i updated the software it would sometimes connect to xbox live, and other times it wouldn't, (always very random when it wanted to work). I rolled back the software and then xbox live would detect an update, but once i install the latest update it breaks xbox live again. The error code i get is 80151904, but i can't even connect to xbox live in the internet settings. Help appreciated, thanks. [link] [comments]

What games are safe to play on a 360 with blades? Posted: 01 Jan 2021 01:23 PM PST I know there's some games that will update the console automatically. Is there a list of games that will work / won't work, or just a general release date to know? Also, if the disk has been in an Xbox with updated software, even if the disk was manufactured before NXE, won't it either update or not work? I recently bought the first Crackdown, I also have a platinum hits copy of COD 2 and I'd like to pick up a copy of Halo 3 to play on it, any other suggestions would be appreciated :) [link] [comments]

I recently found a copy of Brad Pitt Simulator 2014, is anyone else having issues launching the game? It just says mixed media disk and doesn't launch. I know this is an old game but any help is appreciated! [link] [comments] |
