Now have to manually delete notifications

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 04:50 PM PDT

Why did Xbox feel the need to remove the "delete/clear all" option from the notification menu? Now you have to go through and click start on each and every notification, and scroll down to "delete". I can't think of a single reason for doing this. It does nothing but introduce even more inconvenience.

What i really want in a future update is patch notes for my games.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 02:58 AM PDT

PS4 titles have patch notes for every game and there updates. Some are brief while others are really detailed and great to learn about what's been fixed or changed in a game.

It seems like it would be easy to implement so I don't know why it's not an Xbox feature too.

Sinking City got hard pulled from the Microsoft Store ()they killed the page and even in my Library, I still have it on my external hard drive, but I forgot to download the DLC... I don't even see the option to redownload the game when I have the external hard drive unplug.

I know about the lawsuit with Nacon... but man can't even redownload for something I paid?

My theorical calculations about the Xbox Series X and PS5 GPUs relative performance.

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 06:37 PM PDT

My theorical calculations about the Xbox Series X and PS5 GPUs relative performance.

Hello guys, i wanted to share this thoughts with you to know your opinions and debate a bit about it. Im industrial engineer, and im not an expert of this, but following a simple logic chain, i reached some conclusions that i wanted to contrast with you all and maybe with some hardware experts that could teach me something new. Sorry in advance for the long text.

So, as far as we doesn't know how RDNA 2 performs in real world applications, since there are not desktop gpus to contrast with the Xbox Series X specs, lets stick with the worst case scenario:

    • RDNA 1.0 IPC = RDNA 2.0 IPC. Only efficiency improvements.

Lets start with the 40 Cores RX 5700 XT, with 448GB/s of memory bandwidth and running, at stock, at an average sustained frequency of 1887mhz:

Average RX 5700 XT core clock.

On it's most lastest techpowerup benchmarks, the RX 5700 XT seems to be a [108/99*100=109,091 | (1-100/109,091)*100=8,33%] 8,33% slower than the stock RTX 2070 Super, which also have 40 cores and 448GB/s of memory bandwidth:

RX 5700 XT relative performance at 3840x2160p

The RTX 2070 Super it's running at 1879mhz of average core clock:

Average RTX 2070 Super core clock.

So if we calculate a performance/Tflop ratio between RDNA 1.0 and Turing, we get:

    - RX5700XT = 40*64*2*1887/1000^2= 9,66 Tflops of average compute power.

    - RTX 2070 Super = 40*64*2*1879/1000^2= 9,62 Tflops of average compute power.

9.66 Tflops of RDNA 1.0 is a 8,33% slower on average than 9,62 Tflops of Turing, both fed with the same vram and memory bandwidth.

1 Tflop RDNA 1.0 equals to [9,66/(9,62*(100+8,33)/100)= 0,927 Tflops of Turing

Now let's translate this to the Xbox Series X performance:

    1. Percentage improvement over the RX5700XT based on the improvements seen between current RDNA1.0 gpus.

If we compare how do an extra Tflop impacts on performance of RDNA1.0 gpus we should do it comparing the RX5700XT against it's little brother the RX5700.

    - RX 5700 runs at an average of 1738 mhz, which means that the GPU has 8,008 Tflops of average compute power.

    Average RX 5700 core clock

    - With the founders RX 5700 XT running at 9,66 Tflops, we have an improvement of 11% over the 8,008 Tflops of the RX 5700 Red dragon.

RX 5700 relative performance at 3840x2160p

This means that the Xbox Series X 12,147 Tflops should be:

    RX5700 vs RX5700XT: 9,66/8,008 = 20,63% more compute power for 11% more performance.

Xbox Series X vs RX 5700 XT: 12,147/9,66 = 25,75% more compute power, which should deliver: 25,75*11/20,63 = 13,73% more performance without taking in mind the extra memory bandwidth.

Usually, every 1% of extra memory bandwidth translates in a 0.3-0.5% of extra performance at 4K resolutions, depending on the architecture, the game and the bottleneck that the GPU has with it's memory bandwidth. Let's suppose a 0.4% of extra performance for each 1% of extra memory bandwidth for this hipotesis:

25% extra memory bandwidth of the Xbox Series X would translate in a 10% extra performance at 4K. It's not crazy, if we think that i get a 5% of extra performance by just overclocking my memory from 256GB/s to 288GB/s running a bunch of games at 4K (i tested my current RX580 at 256GB/s and compared it to 288GB/s, which is a 5% extra performance for a 12,5% of extra memory bandwidth).

So, in total, we have a 13.73% more performance via compute + 10% extra performance via memory bandwidth = 13.73%*1,10 = 25,1% over the RX5700XT performance.

    2. Translating RDNA 1.0 Tflops = RDNA 2.0 Tflops to Turing and comparing it with the diferents versions.

With this shortcut, we could translate it to Turing Tflops and compare it directly with other similar turing gpus:

    12,147 Tflops RDNA 2.0 = 12,147 Tflops RDNA 1.0 = 11,26 Tflops of Turing.

RTX 2080 Super runs at an average core clock of 1919 mhz:

Average RTX 2080 Super founders core clock

This translates in an average of 11,79 Tflops. So the RTX 2080 Super would be: 11,79/11,26 = 4,7% faster than Series X, adding the extra memory bandwidth of the console: 560/496 = 12,9% of extra bandwidth, traslating to performance with a 0.4 ratio = 5,16%, so 1,0516/1,047 = 0,4% faster than RTX 2080 Super.

In conclusion, we reached with 2 methods of theorical calculations that, in the worst case scenario, the Xbox Series X will be, at least, as fast as the RTX 2080 Super.

EXTRA: It's rumored that RDNA 2.0 could bring a 10% IPC improvement over RDNA 1.0, so in the best case scenario, where would sit the Xbox Series X?

25%+10% of Architecture Improvements = 125*1,10 = 137,5% = 37,5% faster than the RX 5700 XT in the best case scenario.

Repeating all this steps with the PS5 i can also add it to the relative performance comparison:

Next Gen Consoles Relative Performance GPUs (Worst and Best Cases)

The Xbox Series X in the, best case scenario, could be just a (1-(1/(149/137,5) = 7,7% slower than the reference RTX 2080 Ti.

I hope that you found it interesting. We will know it better once RX 6000 series hits the market. For now, it's the best aproximation i could get.

Thank you for those who read it until the end! Please comment your thoughts about it.

Skyrim not working when offline XBOX ONE X with Gold Subscription

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 07:05 PM PDT

    Hi,

So our new house has spotty internet that drops out all the time. So I decided not to bother trying to play online games and play Skyrim, which I have the original disc.

Every time I try and run it, it says I need to be online. Why? I own the original copy. Why can't I play it? I have an Xbox One X and an active Xbox Gold subscription.

I want to buy Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning tomorrow for Xbox, but I won't if I can't play it offline. I will have to get it on PS4, which seems to work fine without any subscriptions or internet access.

    Help!

Why do we need WIFI to set up Xbox one for the first time?

    Posted: 07 Sep 2020 11:05 PM PDT

I don't understand this, you should be able to use the $500 system you bought without connecting to the internet if you want to. I understand it needs the update to play online, but if I want to play it like a normal console like I did back when I was younger why can you not do so? Why don't we have the option to stay offline and just pop in discs and play? Why does it have to be complicated? I mean wouldn't it just make sense if Microsoft manufactures the systems with the ability to play games without you having to do the work for them? Isn't that the reason we bought a console instead of just buying/building a pc?
