I think the overwhelmingly positive reviews of Elden Ring are misleading for those new to the soulsborne genre

    Posted: 26 Feb 2022 12:30 PM PST

I'm brand new to the soulsborne genre, and only thought I'd give it a go due to the hype surrounding the game as well as the extremely positive reviews listed shortly prior to release.

Don't get me wrong, the game is beautiful. Graphically this game just wows and the atmosphere, characters and other characteristics that make up the game are entirely on point.

But, as a newcomer to the genre, I've learnt very quickly that the soulsborne genre as a whole is a genre I can only compare to being an acquired taste.

The gameplay of this type of game are brutal, and leave very little room for error. If that's your thing, then awesome. But as a dad of 3, working two jobs, with very limited time to game, this simply is not a game compatible with my gaming needs.

Perhaps I'd have taken a very different view in my teens, where I'd have more time to learn the patterns of combat, and patience to explore aimlessly. But when you only have an hour or so, once or twice a week, you don't tend to make a lot of progress which isn't a lot of fun. Especially when you have a backlog the length of a scroll.

My advice to anyone pondering the jump into this genre for the first time, don't rely on the reviews alone. Watch some gameplay videos, and check out some previous soulsborne games, whether that be reviews, gameplay videos, or a cheap second hand copy. I think this will go a long way in determining whether Elden Ring is for you, rather than paying full price for am experience you simply won't enjoy.

I'm likely I'm the minority, but thought I'd share my views!

    EDIT: Thanks for the awards!

It makes me laugh that replies are saying "well gaming just isn't for you". I've been gaming for about 25 years now. Gaming is for me. But what I'm looking for in a game has clearly changed. And I've probably been gaming longer than some users have been alive :').

I'm not saying that there isn't a market for these games. There clearly is. My point is that reviews tend not to clearly set out the time investment here. Yes, they say if you find it hard, go explore and come back. But this isn't optional. This is a necessity to get further in the game.

I'm fully aware that soulsborne games are hard. It's common knowledge. But until you get hands on with one, you never really understand just HOW HARD these games are, which means you need such a big time investment.

Anyway, thanks for the responses. I've posted this in a few subs and the response has varied across these which is really interesting!

Budget aside, What is the best television that supports all of these features?

If you bought Elden Ring and are finding it too difficult, use an Astrologer. Mini starting guide to make life easier.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 01:12 AM PST

Using an Astrologer trivializes most things in the game. I SUCK at these games, and I'm summoning the wolves on bosses, and killing them in 4 shots without getting touched once using Rock Sling. Open World bosses and enemies are even easier, just stay mounted, and use Rock Sling or Glintstone Arc for groups to take an entire mob out in 2 shots.

It's making the game much more enjoyable. Just pump INT/Vig at a 2-1 ratio, get Mind to 20, and enough STR/DEX/END as you need it for things. You can also get a Meteor Staff, the Rock Sling spell, and an INT scaling Katana all in the same area, all like 10 minutes after you get your horse.

It's BY FAR the best and easiest starting class and is making me enjoy the game because I NEVER have to deal with that nonsense of learning patterns and dying over and over.

Follow this general build guide - https://www.powerpyx.com/elden-ring-best-starting-class-guide/

Get this staff and Rock Sling after you get your horse - https://www.polygon.com/elden-ring-guide-walkthrough/22950714/meteorite-staff-best-early-game-staff-and-spell-for-sorcery-intelligence-rock-sling

    Get this Katana - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XxYnpQdikA8

    • You'll need to farm some levels to use it as it requires 15 STR and 14 DEX.

      • Speaking of farming, you can also make it easy after getting Rock Sling and the staff, then following this guide to farm up some levels. With the above spells, and staying mounted, this takes me like 45 seconds each time and gets around 4000 runes, so AGAIN, if you're having difficulties or just want to buff up your stats a bit, this is a great way to do it.

I hope that makes things easier. I'm really enjoying the game knowing I can actually progress and explore now.

EDIT: Just a heads up.. Once you get Rock Sling, you want to replace Glintstone Arc and use Pebble for dungeon trash, Rock Sling for bosses and also for groups if needed.

I'd highly recommend farming souls for a bit to get INT up to 22, Mind to 20, Str to 15, Dex to 14, End to 12 and Vigor to 12 using the farming method above. It won't take too long, and it will make your life much much easier when exploring dungeons, caves, taking on bosses and for general mana usage so you don't run out. It will also allow you to simply focus on pumping INT and VIG from the on at the 2-1 ratio.

I also only use 2 healing pots, the rest are dedicated to Mana so you can keep going longer.

One other tip to conserve Runes is that when you know you almost have enough to level up, fast travel back to the above location and do a quick run, then level up. It may be kind of cheesy, but it allows you to keep leveling and not get frustrated.

Gamepass ultimate sharing between Xboxes, question.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 04:39 AM PST

Series of events : I have gamepass ultimate on my Forza 5 Xbox one. Me, Wife, and daughter all have access to gamepass ultimate and Xbox gold via my family plan, presumably.

I update to series X, give daughter my old Xbox and she still has access to gamepass and Xbox gold even though my account is only present in the background of it. She is still a member of my family plan when checked.

Buy daughter a series S eventually, put her profile onto it and she no longer has access to gamepass or xbox gold membership.

Added my profile to her xbox as well, in a similar capacity to the way my profile was on the forza xbox. No change. Her profile still appears in my family plan page when checked.

Am I overlooking something? None of these consoles have ever been my home xbox. My wife still has access to both Xbox Live and Gamepass on the forza xbox. My niece 20 states away on a completely separate xbox is a member of the family plan as well, and says she has access to both - But she's young so she may not understand what I'm asking and might be incorrect.

Question: Can the Series X use a browser extension ad blocker? (Might be against Rule 7...)

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 08:06 AM PST

Alright, I gotta complain really fast.

    Posted: 27 Feb 2022 07:58 AM PST

So, to preface this, I'm a huge FromSoft fan, and have been drooling over Elden Ring since it was announced. Well, two months ago my girlfriends boss offered to take us on a cruise, which starts tomorrow. Sucks that it's right after the game releases, but it'll be there when I get back, no big deal. And I did the New Zealand trick, so I got to put in a whole extra day of play before vacation.

Well, right now we're driving down to Galveston to get into town a little early to mitigate any hiccups, and I brought my Razer Kishi along so I could do the remote gaming, and get it a little more out of my system before we get on the ship tomorrow. I just tried…

And Microsoft updated the app, so remote consoles have to be re-registered. In which, you need to be with the console. I'm already hours away. This sucks.
