What’s a reputable place to buy used consoles?

    Posted: 29 Dec 2021 06:20 AM PST

decided to break out my old 360 arcade from 2008 after several years to play NCAA14 and it appears the HDMI port isn't working. I have to yank out my disc drive and force it closed for it to work. I dont think it will be worth the hassel to fix so I wan't to find a place to buy one, I found a place called DKoldies they look pretty reputable but the prices seem a little steep. Does anybody have any suggestions of places to look?

Im trying to avoid ebay as I've had some negative experiences with electronics from there in the past.

    My 360 Arcade...

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 03:36 PM PST

I own a Xbox 360 Arcade that I shit you not. Has survived 8 red rings of death.

All I ever did was turn it off. Wait a bit, turn it back on. No stupid towel tricks or what have you. Occasionally I'd get the screen the multiple languages that said "your shit is broke" but I'd simply hard reset it and it was fine. I don't know how or what. But I've gotten the various rings, the hardware, the over heat, the various red ring sections as well as the full red ring.

One time my friend put it fallout 3, booted up the game. The xbox then decided nope, not playing that trash, slapped open the disc reader (xbox was sat upright) so hard, the disk came out, rolled across the floor and stopped at my friends feet. Restarted the system and no joke. Red ring. I looked at my friend like "what did you do??" and he was dumbfounded "I was just gonna play some fallout 3.." Restarted it a few times. And it was fine. I still have this xbox 360 to this day and even contacted xbox support to see if there were any boot or error logs I could pull from it since they obviously stopped support for the 360 at the time, and figured, "its well past its warrenty, maybe xbox support can help me and, they too were as dumbfounded as I was.

My xbox 360 Arcade refuses to die currently and I've had this thing since 2008.. But it has a few quirks to it. I will NOT play halo 3 AT ALL. Even tried downloading the game to the harddrive. Nope. LONGEST LOADING TIMES EVER. It will boot the game. but I've had entire lobbies QUIT because I know.. I'm the one slowing EVERYTHING down. Campaign, multiplayer, doesn't matter. The thing just hates halo. The disk is fine btw. Resurfaced and even plays fine on other friend's 360s but mine. Nope. It was DONE with that shit. I even went as far as to replace the disk drive in the 360 myself. After some fun with a soldering iron - you have to keep the original laser reader to the 360 because its hard coded into the system so if you put a whole new CD drive into the system, it wouldn't recognize the new CD drive. I followed repair tutorials on youtube, my CD drive didn't want to open really, even the button hardly worked and figured the CD drive being old and faulty was why my xbox didn't like halo 3 but alas after all that effort... still no halo 3.

I think now.. I ought to replace the fan in it because the sumbitch sounds like a 747 taking off, no dust mind you. Probably bad bearings... Also.. maybe I'm misremembering if this was a normal thing but now it only boots if the TV is on. If I turn it on before the TV, it sorta sits in this limbo state of no boot where I have to turn it off and then on again for it to boot correctly. This is also the case if I don't have a controlled plugged into it. No clue but this thing is still trooping on.

The other day I played Deadpool and even Rockband 2 on it. The USB ports are worn to shit so I have to have controller cables plugged in JUST right for the damn thing to realize "Oh there IS a controller plugged in."

If anyone knows why my 360 Arcade is a bit quirky, let alone how its still alive, and ways to fix it, I'd love to hear it. I think in a year or two at this point my Arcade will be sentient and ask me next time I boot it up, "Why won't you let me die??"

    Trial Version of Downloaded Games

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 02:20 PM PST

My downloaded Xbox 360 games reverted to Trial versions despite my purchasing them long ago. This is now my third 360 and I have done the license transfers before, and they have come back on now that I have signed out and managed to sign back into my Live account.

My question is, what causes this to happen? Do I always have to be online for my games to work? I'm considering canceling my Gold service as I don't play online on my 360 and haven't in years. However, I don't want to lose my library of games that I paid for and have had for years. Some of them were still Trial versions unless I downloaded an update (why is there an update for Super Meat Boy on 360 in the past five years??). I don't want to lose access to my games if I decide I don't want to pay $10 a month for a Gold service I don't use, or if Microsoft finally pulls the plug on 360 online support.

Is there a long-term solution for me?

I think my 360 has decided to give up

    Posted: 28 Dec 2021 05:01 PM PST

I got a 2nd hand 360 a while back, not modded or anything. I made a post about how it really struggled with connecting to the internet, but eventually I was able to get this horrible setup going where I could tether it to my PC and get updates, downloads, sync profiles, etc.

Last night I decided I'd get some old DLC that I enjoyed. The 360 at this point has been offline for a couple months, since it didn't need to be once the games I wanted to play were updated.

Initially it signed on just fine, but it wanted me to log into live again after all this time. I got stuck in the pretty common loop where it decides there's an issue with your authentication, even though I logged in fine via my laptop. I spent all night unable to recover that profile on my 360, although it's still fine on the website. It just refused to redownload the profile.

Then it started to take issue with my internet. Somehow it decided that the wired tether was a wireless connection and no amount of troubleshooting THAT issue would let me get back online. At the suggestion of several walkthroughs for, again, this very strangely common internet issue I moved all of my hard drive info to a safe storage and factory reset the console.

That leads us to now. It won't play discs, although it can read them enough to show their logo on the dash. It won't detect or connect to any source of internet. It won't detect anything plugged into it, including charge cables for the controller and wired controllers (my one wireless controller connects ok but won't charge when plugged in), it acts like nothing is plugged in. It will turn on, the dash looks normal, I can navigate settings, and that's it.

I'm honestly kind of heartbroken? I don't want to drop money on a newer Xbox, it doesn't have enough newer titles to justify the purchase, and after having this much trouble will I just end up bricking another used console? It's the 360 S if that makes any difference, I don't think there's anything to do for it at this point.
