Thank you to reddit user SouthernGentleman583 for a copy of battlefield 5!

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 04:56 PM PDT

A couple of months ago u/southerngentleman583 had a giveaway on this subreddit for battlefield 5 and another game. I won the copy of battlefield 5, but somehow I missed the message he sent me with the code. I found it last night when going through my reddit, and it redeemed without a problem. So I wanted to thank him (already sent him a PM) and put up a post here about it. I know some people where doing fake giveaways a few months back, so I just wanted everyone to know that at least some of them were legit. Thanks southergentleman583!

Mine has been in service for 6 years now. But I think it's going to retire by the 7 year mark when I'm getting a series x.

Observation, Ori 1+2, Outer Wilds(!), The Outer Worlds, Overcooked 2, and Oxenfree. All pretty good games. I wonder if there's some correlation between game quality and the letter O.

PSA: Script no longer needed for HDD replacement. SSD and Liquid Metal experience.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 12:47 PM PDT

TLNDR - Liquid Metal can make the x1x silent and is recommended if you are comfortable with opening your xbox to reapply, if necessary. Otherwise quality thermal compound is fine. Internal SSD vs External SSD is disappointing but can be recommended for those in the insider program's alpha/betas or those irritated by slow startup/shutdown when console is set to energy savings.

Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut Liquid Metal Experience

Used my xbox one X 1 year with stock paste. It's located just behind/bottom of the TV screen. Beside the TV's stand and rotated 180 degrees so that it's backside is facing the middle of the room. Yup, it's ugly, but why? The intake is on the sides and exhaust is out the back so it blows that hot air out into the room. The TV screen acts as a barrier to keep that hot air away from the intake.

Fans were nearly always at middle speed, sometimes high speed with X enhanced games. Once in middle or high fan speed, I never heard it go back to the low nearly quiet speed unless I turn the console off, let it cool then turn back on. If I haven't gamed in awhile and use the console for YouTube, Netflix, it's during those times the fan can stay low for at least an hour or two before going to middle speed.

Once the warranty expired, I repasted with LM. You are allowed to open the console during warranty, but I'd rather avoid any questions about it if I ever need to claim warranty. Difference is staggering! The console stayed in the low fan speed most of the time and only kicks into middle speed on hot days. It didn't matter whether the game was x enhanced or not. Rarely do I remember hearing the high fan speed. Unlike before, once reaching middle fan speed, it will eventually ramp back down to the near silent low fan speed which was awesome when you watch Netflix/YouTube.

All was well and good until roughly 6-8 months in when it regularly kicked into highest fan speed mode with x enhanced games then eventually with all xbox one games. When on high speed the air coming out wasn't hot. Took it apart and LM was still wet. When I cleaned the copper heatsink it left a stain. Just like Gamer's Nexus' test:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cQaqUyKVIEE

ion migration took place so you just need to put more on it. Once it's stained, it will not stain that area any more. I added a tiny drop more LM, reassembled and it's actually better! I'm 8-9 months later, and I have yet to hear the fan go into the highest fan speed. In fact I rarely hear the middle speed. It's 95% lowest fan speed which is near silent.

Therefore I only recommend LM for those comfortable with taking the console apart. Otherwise, just use a quality paste.

    TIPS:

    • Very easy to do basic vacuuming of x1x. Two torx screws to remove on the back, slide the top cover forward a touch, then carefully swing open the cover like a book. Be careful of the PCB on the side, you can nick it if you lose your grip. Once open, you can vacuum or air blow out.
    • When applying LM, you can use Kapton tape (<$3) instead of using conformal coating/nail polish. You can even glob non conductive thermal paste. I used a bent needle to spread the LM on the die. After this, put the heatsink on temporarily to get a square stencil of the die with LM on the heatsink. Now put an even smaller dot on the die and the heatsink and spread on both keeping within the shape of the die.
    • Some of the thermal gum over the RAM/ICs didn't cover them completely. You'll notice the thermal gum is circular but the chips are square. Feel free to carefully reshape so that it is a square but do not squeeze them to reduce their height.

Internal SSD vs External NVME SSD Experience

Sometime with firmware mid 2019, you no longer need the following awesome partition script: https://gbatemp.net/download/xbox-one-windows-and-linux-internal-hard-drive-partitioning-script.34239/ to replace the internal HDD with another HDD or SSD. You just need a new SATA drive and the OSU on a USB drive available from xbox.com. Unfortunately an internal SSD is less of an upgrade when compared to external SSD. I'm comparing an internal Micron M500 SATA internal vs. external Intel 660p NVME-USB.

The Intel 660p NVME-USB does transfer at 500MB/S with the Xbox one X. You can recreate this by copying from one external USB SSD (eg. Micron M500) to another (Intel 660p) as long as they are capable on transferring at 500MB/s.

Startup and shutdown is fast! Average startup from energy savings to the dashboard is 30 seconds. It'd be at least 1 1/2 minutes prior. You do notice less lag around the dashboard interface, but MS has made lots of improvements the past 6 months. Disk prep for updates is faster, but not much faster if that game is on an external SSD. Loading times is again no different over the external SSD. It is mostly a disappointment you if already have an external USB SSD.

I also ran into an issue where my M500 960GB SSD was formatted as a 500GB. No surprise really since I suspect xbox wants a true 1TB. I feel like taking the xbox apart and trying to extend the partition myself, but if I open it again, I'll be putting the original HDD back since I'll probably be selling the x1x for the series X at that point.

    TIPS:

    • Make sure the replacement drive is 500GB or 1TB.
    • If on xbox insiders alpha/beta builds, unenroll temporarily and install the public build. Do not remove the device from the program, there are two separate areas. The one you want won't show you the serial number of your console.
    • On the new drive, clear it's partition tables. Use Window's diskpart command line with:
      list disk [note disk #]
select disk # [where # is disk above]
list disk or detail disk [double check you chose the right one]
      clear

FPS gaming monitor for Xbox Series X

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:16 AM PDT

Hello all! I spend most of my time in the hospital and a fair portion of my free time gaming. I've been gaming my whole life but am not extremely familiar with all the technical differences in monitors outside of simpler things like fps.

I play mostly Apex Legends and would like to invest in a nice monitor for the best possible gaming experience. I am looking at buying a monitor now that I can use for my current Xbox, but also one that would be ideal for the upcoming Xbox Series X.

Since it's a console and the specs are static and universal, there must be a single "best" FPS gaming monitor, right? I want to make sure I'm getting the best FPS (which looks to be capped at 120 hz for the new Xbox), motion blur resistance, and graphics, obviously. Maybe there is no one exact answer but I'd like to hear some thoughts on what the perfect monitor would be and some links to the exact monitors you're talking about.

I've done some research but I think the learning curve is a bit too steep for my understanding of it all, so some straight up recommendations would be extremely appreciated! Also- I've got a 27" currently and I see a lot of talk about 24" vs 27" and if there is practically any difference outside of personal preference.

Thank you guys so much for reading my post and thanks ahead of time for any advice you may afford me.

    Headphone Mic barely works. Solutions?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 03:48 PM PDT

I bought a pair of cheap Sony earbuds to communicate with friends while playing Warzone. When I use them for an Xbox party chat I am heard clearly, but when I use them through Warzone game chat, I literally have to put the mic in my mouth so that people can hear me. Had anyone encountered this kind of problem? Thanks in advance.

Question for Elite Series 2 Users

How do i fix this problem? I have refreshed my games and apps and also restarted my console. It has been like this for almost a week.

Had to repair a controller and didn't have any normal sticks so I made do with some Xbox 360 sticks and I'm really liking it so far.

    Xbox disconnecting

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 05:21 PM PDT

My console keeps disconnecting from Xbox live for, as far as I can tell, no reason what so ever, I've been kicked out of games multiple times and lost hours of progress in some games because of this, is there anyway to stop the console from disconnecting from Xbox live like this. My internet connection is fine.

I have about 40$ left on a gift card and I’m looking to buy a single player game. What should I get??

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 08:23 AM PDT

Edit: I definitely should've given more details including that I have the game pass and the games I've played. That saying the single player games I've played recently are fallout4, fallout NV, rdr2, gta 5, fallen order and some others I can't name off the top of my head. I bought the bioshock bundle and that's why I have around 40 bucks left.
